Debt Mediators Help You with Your Debt Problems

Article: Getting out of debt

Your personal expenses.

You may have got into debt by spending too much, especially by using credit cards or easy vendor finance. It may have been other reasons, but to tackle your current debt problems, take a good hard look at your current spending. This is a vital step. You need to look at what you are doing now to plan what to do next. Unless you can reasonably predict what you are going to spend, you won't be able to effectively plan to reduce your debts.

Do your research well. Here are some steps in your research. By the way, this can be quite difficult work, but if you are serious about fixing your problems, it needs to be done.

  1. Collect all your credit card statements for the past 12 months. If necessary, contact the lending institution to get any that are missing.
  2. Collect all your bank statements for savings, check, mortgage and any other you have.
  3. Collect any other investment accounts - any finance accounts that you may have.
  4. Collect all records of your income for the last 12 months. This may be as easy as grabbing your payslip if your income is regular and unchanged.
  5. Work out how much cash you have spent in the past 12 months and write down what you have spent it on. Cash drawings on your bank statements will help here. If you have difficulty with this, you may need to seek some bookkeeping help.
  6. Get a multicolumn account book, or use a spreadsheet on your computer and list all that you have spent. Total up in categories will help. There is a free budgeting spreadsheet available for you to use - see next section.
